Garlic chives (Allium tuberosum), also known as Chinese chives, are a hardy perennial herb in the onion family. Unlike regular chives, which have a mild onion flavor, garlic chives have flat, grass-like leaves with a distinct garlicky taste and aroma.
🌿 Appearance: The leaves are long, flat, and strap-shaped, growing in dense clumps that can reach 12–24 inches tall. In late summer, they produce clusters of small, star-shaped white flowers that are highly attractive to pollinators.
🌱 Flavor & Use: Their flavor is a blend of mild garlic and onion, making them popular in Asian cuisine. They are commonly used fresh in dumplings, stir-fries, soups, and as a garnish. The flowers and buds are also edible and make a flavorful addition to dishes.
🌼 Growth Habit: Garlic chives are perennial, meaning they return year after year. They tolerate poor soil and are very resilient once established, often spreading by seed or root clumps if not managed.
