I Don’t think there is anything as naturally beautiful as this variety of corn. Each ear shimmers with translucent kernels in brilliant shades of blue, purple, pink, green, and gold — truly looking like polished glass. This stunning flint corn is grown not only for its beauty but also for its versatility. It can be used for popping, grinding into cornmeal, or simply displayed as a dazzling decoration. Developed from heirloom varieties by Carl Barnes, a Cherokee farmer, Glass Gem is a living work of art that showcases the beauty of biodiversity and traditional seed stewardship. Plants reach 8-10 ft tall!

Planting Guide:

🕒 When to Plant:
Sow outdoors after the last frost when soil temperatures reach at least 60°F (16°C). Corn loves warmth and sunlight.

🌱 Planting Depth:
Plant seeds 1 inch deep in well-drained, fertile soil.

📏 Spacing:
Space seeds 8–12 inches apart in rows about 30–36 inches apart. For best pollination and well-filled ears, plant in blocks of at least 4 rows instead of a single long row.

🌞 Sunlight:
Full sun (6–8+ hours per day).

💧 Watering:
Keep soil consistently moist, especially during germination and tasseling. Avoid water stress when kernels are forming.

🌾 Fertilizing:
Corn is a heavy feeder — enrich the soil with compost or a balanced organic fertilizer before planting. Side-dress with nitrogen once plants reach knee height.

⏳ Days to Maturity:
About 100–110 days to maturity.

🌿 Harvest:

  • For ornamental use: Harvest when husks are dry and papery.

  • For popping or grinding: Allow ears to fully dry on the stalk before harvesting.

  • For seed saving: Select the most colorful, fully mature ears and dry thoroughly before storage.
